Discussion: Shostakovich: Symphony No. 11 - Bychkov

Anyone with an opinion about this performance, and how it stacks up sonically against the other 61 versions of the Eleventh in the SACD catalog? Any thoughts on Bychkov's cycle generally? Hurwitz doesn't like him, which may be a good sign.....

All the discs are in my collection but no opinion to offer today as not listened to them for ages. Maybe that tells you a story as they are not the first port of call when selecting Sh discs to spin. The Linn Sh 11 is hard to beat, that much I can offer.

I have Bychkov's 4th, which counts among my favorite interpretations and also is perfect sonically. Don't know #11, but my favorite Caetani is hard to beat on the huge bells in the end alone.

I have found Bychkov's recordings of Shostakovich 4 and 11 to be excellent alternatives to what is available elsewhere on SACD. In fact, Bychkov's interpretation of the 4th would be among my top choices, and his 11th offers a fascinating view on the symphony (rather fluent tempos!) - different yet complimentary to Wigglesworth's fine BIS accounts. Other SACD recordings of the 11th I happen to have heard (but no longer possess) are Kofman's, Lazarev's and Pletnev's: if memory serves correctly, the latter two seemed rather eccentric in some of their tempo choices, whereas Kofman left little impression at all. Of course, there exist also several excellent (and perhaps "more authentic") accounts on RBCD.

I also have Bychkov's recording of Shostakovich 10, which is good rather than spectacular; I think there are better choices available, albeit only on RBCD.

Nice sound too.

Indeed there aren't many 4th's around on SACD. You may recall Chicago let us down on this one 2/3 years ago by releasing their excellent 4th only as a RB in their live CSResound series. Not sure there is a really good one on disc

The Wigglesworth on BIS is outstanding in both performance and sound.

Thanks, everyone, for the input. I'll look into Bychkov's Fourth-- I have Jarvi's recording (Chandos RBCD), but it's a work that could really benefit from a good DSD recording.
