Yes, I am very chambermusic-centric (and don't even own a copy of Beethoven's 5th), but I am very fond of the odd orchestral work. Harmonielehre (Lesson in Harmony) has intoxicated me for several decades now. I am 'over the moon' to see it on Superaudio AND with Tilson Thomas at the tiller! Likewise for SFS whom I remember fondly from my student days.

I'm with you all the way with this one, Beagle. Used to play the old Nonesuch recordings soooo many times. And MTT, what a pleasure! I would just add "Common tones in simple time" to the SACD, but I know that would be too much asking.

I'm assuming that this February 15th release will be multichannel as are all other SFS releases?

I have a pre-release copy courtesy of a friend, and it is definitely Mch. I hope to post a review soon. Just to give you a preview, it with be 5 stars all around, though I do not plan to listen to in stereo. I love this music!

This disc looks like a real gem. I love the Harmonielehre and have both the Edo de Waart and Simon Rattle recordings of it and, of the two, rate the de Waart very highly. I consider the work one of Adams' greatest.

The opening is rather bold because of the image that inspired the composition. "Adams has stated that the piece was inspired by a dream he had in which he was driving across the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge and saw an oil tanker on the surface of the water abruptly turn upright and take off like a Saturn V rocket."[Wikipedia]. I see the tanker clearly each time I hear the piece.
Looking forward to hearing this new recording. A bit mean for length though - only 47 mins. Harmonium as well would have been nice.

Short Ride in a Fast Machine has an interesting Proms history. It was first programmed to be played on the last night of the Proms in 1997. Then Diana went and took such a ride and it didn't end well. The piece was pulled and, if I remember correctly, replaced by Jupiter, which was supposed to be one of her favourite pieces.

The Proms programmers tried again. This time for the last night in Sept 2001...

Don't think they've had the nerve to programme it since.

Tom, was Sound Mirror involved in this recording?

John
