After seeing the staggeringly expensive Decca/Solti Ring Cycle, I sure would like to see more of Solti's CSO material released on SACD. His Mahler 8 would be a great start for one, but I would soil my britches to see his 1971 Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique (one of Decca's K Wilkinson Krannert Center stunners) as well as his Brahms Symphony cycle amongst others come out..finally Solti's "Rite of Spring" from the early 1970's would be sweet as well....

Cheers,

The Mahler 8 is available as an SHM-CD at CDJapan.com. Not sure about the other.

Stereo Sound, an audio magazine and a main distributor of Esoteric's SACD reissues in Japan, commissioned a second run of the Solti Ring cycle on SACD. The second edition came without books and DVD I believe but was much cheaper at $350. 300 or so sets were made but unfortunately they were sold out by the time I found out.

If they do another run at that price I'm seriously interested. But not at the original $800 even with all the extras....

Trying to think of what Solti I'd still like to hear; he recorded so much. I tend to prefer other interpretations of most works nowadays.

Hmmmm. Definitely Strauss' Elektra from the analog era, (not Salome). I recall a really intense performance of Shostakovich's 8 with the Chicago but that's from the Digital era.

I would like both the Strauss operas but I can live without his Shostakovich 8. I remember buying the CD, playing it once and giving it away. Too rushed for me.

What I want is an SACD of the Previn/LSO on EMI.

I really enjoyed Solti's rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony with the CSO. Hope they can release an SACD of it.

Another vote for Elektra (heck, I like Salome, too!) as well as his Mahler 6th and 9th, Stravinsky Rite of Spring, and Bartok Miraculous Mandarin.

Well, considering the plethora of EMI Japan SACDs appearing, you may get your wish!!!

Listened to the Mahler 8 on RBCD today and found the disc to be very unnatural sounding! I mean the orchestra sounded fine but the choral voices all sounded disconnected from one another and as a whole from the orchestra as if they were recorded separately in different venues with different reverb characteristics/mike setups. Moreover, there were many passages where some of the voices sounded wobbly like the tape has badly deteriorated or the tape speed was unstable. I'm not sure if these bugs I'm describing here affect all previous issues of this title (mine is part of the newly released Decca Sound box), but I did go to Amazon.com to listen to clips off the regular RBCD and could clearly hear the wobbly voices too. What a shame as I couldn't argue with the performance.
