I have a number of the first-generation Sony SACDs, and I've noticed that a couple of them just don't work. In particular, I purchased the Szell / Strauss disc new at a record store, and it is recognized as a SACD but does not play properly. The Bernstein/Mahler 1 disc I purchased used (also at a store) and it is not even recognized as a SACD.
Do I have any recourse? I'm guessing that Sony doesn't have any spares of these discs anymore if I called them to complain.

I've read lots of stories about malfunctioning Sony SACD players, but never about mispressed Sony SACDs. Which player have you tried them with?

I see that you have an Oppo 93. I also have one, and both titles (which I bought many years ago) are recognized normally.

I think it is a problem of your player. I had in the past different SACD players and sometimes some of them didn't read properly every SACD disc. I always changed those players and since I have a Sony SCD-1 never more I have had any problem during playing of any disc.

Yes, BDP-93.
And, I'm a bit embarassed...the Strauss disc plays fine. Must be a problem with my old player...probably should test again before posting :p
The Mahler, however, leads the Oppo to say "Unknown Disc," and refuse to proceed further. I also had the opportunity to try it out on an older Sony player, which likewise couldn't read it.

I also have an Oppo 93 and both of these single layer discs; both discs play fine in the Oppo (and in three other players: two Denons and a Pioneer).
