The earliest piece on this CD was written in 1980, who would record in mono after that? Maybe for radio purposes. Chandos provides no recording dates and it doesn´t say whether it is stereo or mono either.
I just checked again and the whole CD is in stereo.
Alexina Louie is a new name to me.

Ah, indeed; I finally found it on Amazon, and the samples sound stereo. If you will confirm that there are no Mono cuts on this historic disc

Dear friends!

I confirm that Chandos CD contains the good stereo recordings.
This CD was released in "historical" series, because the recordings were provided from the orchestra's archives.
This CD contains world premiere recordings of one of the unique and neglected composers of XX century.

Wow, I liked this disc much better than Beagle did. What a gorgeous piece Walton's Sonata for Strings is! I'd never heard it before. I can't compare it to other recordings, but the playing struck me as, at the very least, quite competent. And it was a rare treat to hear the Beethoven String Quartet adapted for chamber orchestra. Nice sonics, too.

George:

Thanks for the detailed review. I just ordered a copy.

My pleasure, Seth. One of the good things about writing the occasional review is that I get to sift through my discs and find a few that have not yet been talked about on our site. The Walton piece is boss. I hope you enjoy it.

After another listen, I would rate the performance four and the sonics on this one three to three and a half stars. I want to hear another rendition of the Walton.

The excellent recording by Marriner is released in a 10 cd box now. It is better than the one from Holland. But RBCD of course.

I received the Marriner box today and it is a lovely product with each CD presented in a sleeve with a replica of the original LP cover. Like meeting an old friend again, or several.
