Hearing quite a lot of tape hiss in the samples on their site..

Is it apparent in the Quad on the BDA you bought, Luong? Thx in advance :-)

Adam, I have a slew of HDTT DVD~Rs in 96/24 and my impression: They sound great. I believe the original Open Reel of Bach Fugues from RCA 'might' have been Dolby b encoded and from the samples, I don't hear any hiss (played on a Big Mac). And I am VERY sensitive to HISS (and NO, don't have any pet snakes).

They have some great sales from time to time too. Just scored the Ella Fitzgerald sings Rodgers and Hart Songbook (96/24 DVD~R) for $6.30 and it really sounds fantastic.

And as HDTT rightfully boasts: Our Discs are BURNED not STAMPED!

Although the HDTT transfers from 1970s quadraphonic reel tapes are pretty spectacular in their own quasi-historical way, some of the new, original 24/96 5.0 high res recordings are distinctive with their immersive sound field: the Bruckner Mass No. 3, recorded in 2013 and the Verdi Requiem, recorded in 2014 were both recorded from the conductor's perspective, and both with minimalist microphone techniques. And more such to come shortly from HDTT!

More than likely, the original Master tapes were encoded for Dolby A, whilst the consumer versions were Dolby B encoded:

That makes the most sense from a professional viewpoint.

Wonder how the master tapes have withstood the test of time?

There is no audible hiss even when I played it at high volume. It excels at high volume.

I don’t know how sensitive your ears are to the hiss. I remember the long gone days when I used Metal cassette tapes with Dolby C to copy those LPs that I could not afford. I can crank up the volume without increasing hiss when using Dolby C.

My auditory response now must have deteriorated compared to its sensitivity of those youthful days. My audiogram series in Occupational Health Dept still stay the same but they measure only to 8,000 Hz. Those 16,000 – 20,000 Hz bands are of no use or importance to the Company!

Anyhow, I think this HDTT Blu-ray Bach's Greatest Fugues Scored For Double Orchestra deserves to be listed in SA-CD.net database. I hope zeus or poly could find a way to help me to get pass its lacking of bar code. Without this the submission screen would not let me enter.

Thank you very much for all the info :-)

I don't know at what frequency/or frequencies tape hiss is audible but I can hear it on these Bach samples on the HDTT site, still it would appear the sample clips are not representative of the Quad transfer on offer.

Interesting thoughts re: one's hearing. I've never had mine properly tested (I'm curious to have it done by a prof tho) but fwiw last time I played a load of test tones I got to 16khz where I could still hear the tone as a shrill bright 'meep', the next tone at 17khz came through fainter and more piercing still and started to hurt my ears and thereafter I couldn't hear 18khz +.

It's rather a shame (and unusual, no?!) there are no barcodes or other catalogue numbers as identifiers for the purposes of adding this title to sa-cd.net's database.. can it be bought from any of this site's linked vendors (Amazon, CDJapan, jpc., etc)?

AFAIK, Adam, these quad BD~As from HDTT are only available from their website for now. Perhaps as more titles are added to their catalog, they'll sell them at the various Amazon, etc. websites.

SA~CD.net usually links all SACDs and BD~As to the current Amazon, jpc and CDJapan vendors.

Oh! You mean there's more than this Bach Quad title on BD-A from HDTT?

(I must see if they ship o/s the U.S..!)

Yes, there are a number of BD Audio discs available from HDTT, with more on the way. The bar coding issue is being worked on now so that the entire HDTT high res BD A inventory can be listed on SA-CD.

John, will HDTT ever release some of the wonderful RCA QUAD (Dolby b encoded) reels of Film Scores performed by Charles Gerhardt.

A few years ago, I did petition HDTT to release Jazz titles from existing OR and my prayers were indeed answered.

I have in my OR collection a plethora of mint condition QUAD reels (a lot of POP/Rock included) which I haven't played in years even though I have a TEAC OR Quad deck with an outboard Dolby b decoder. But I realize HDTT tracks has to be careful NOT to release titles NOT in the public domain.

Bu as we all know, the older Teacs can't hold a candle to the newer turbo charged Open Reel Decks which are being utililized by HDTT.

BTW, I erroneously listed the original Open Reel of Ormandy's Bach Fugues as being dolby b encoded. I have it and it is NOT but I do have James Levine & the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performing Mahler's Symphony # 4 in G with Judith Blegen Soprano/Samuel Magad solo violin as a dolby b encoded RCA QUAD Reel.
