Our mic setup for a project like this would typically be five omnidirectional mics for the multichannel pickup, with a separate two-or-three omni mic setup for the two-channel pickup---plus solo/spot mics as needed. The multichannel setup would roughly mimic the ITU multichannel speaker arrangement, with adjustments of spacing based on our listening during sound checks. (Our control room monitor setup would use five loudspeakers in a similar arrangement.)

We use the usual DPA, Schoeps and Neumann microphones, Millennia or Grace preamps, and our converters are either Genex, Mytek or Meitner---depending on what's available and what the project needs. We record DSD to Pyramix and Genex 9048. Editing is done on Pyramix at our studios in Boston.

I'll try to round up some session photos today!

Is this the beginning of something much bigger or a one off for this label?

Among other details here, looks like Meitner converters for this project; also Studer mixing consoles for making a monitor mix.

I think everyone involved is aiming to make this just the beginning of a long collaboration between the South Dakota Chorale, the Gothic label and Soundmirror.
No word yet on what's next though.

Brilliant pics Branton; how interesting to compare with those posted on the Life and Breath thread by Tom, especially mic placements and similarity of building structure. Thanks - I'm sure - from all of us.

I had always assumed etc

If MCH (front) arrangement was ideal for stereo, that would have been always used (even before MCH). It is not. Decca Tree is slightly similar, though.

Michael Bishop of 5/4 productions says that the placement of the right and left microphones for stereo and multichannel are different because in stereo one has to create a strong "phantom" center channel between the right and left channels whereas multichannel has a real center channel speaker.

He uses 4 microphones for stereo and 7 microphones for multichannel, 11 microphones total.

Interesting. In the 60's Columbia used 3-channels to record Leonard Bernstein, which I assume meant that the center channel got mixed into both the L & R. That could be done with MC, I am sure. Perhaps it would not sound the same.

My thought, though, is that stereo listeners have a perception that the record labels want to satisfy, which is of a more close-miked sound, whereas MC listeners are expecting more air around a concert hall recording.

Using mics placed at a farther distance back from the performers would seem, in my mind, to lessen the need for separate microphones. I recall a mic placement schematic I once saw where the microphones for a MC setup were faced similar to a five-pointed star:
...................................C
..............................L--------R
...............................RL-RR

There was no more than 1.5 feet between the L & R microphones and not more than 1.5 feet from C to the Rears. The L & R and RR and RL were angled outward at 45 degress from C; C was pointed straight forward at the stage. This setup was mid-way back on the floor of the hall, I believe, perhaps a little closer. I would think this kind of configuration would solve many accoustic delay issues, as well as allow for the use of common sources for MC and stereo. Not a trained engineer, I would guess this setup uses uni-directional mics rather than omni.

However in the photo it appears the mics were much farther apart. How do you fix the delay issues with this?

I was perusing the site for a version of the Durufle Requiem to purchase, obviously the recording team here makes this disc of interest to me. I am curious if anyone could comment on the performance (including the issue of the version used).

A review from Gramophone September 2012 is reprinted on the Amazon.com page linked here. Not a ton of information, but certainly a favorable review of this performance of the organ version. Thanks for bringing this up, somehow I'd missed it.
