Neat review, Adrian. Thanks. I have the Mehta Mahler 3 set:

Mahler: Symphony No. 3 - Mehta

... and thought it very good too.

Thanks, my pleasure.

I have Mahler III from Chailly and however good it is, I find it lacks warmth. Chailly is a bit chilly, which is remarkable for an Italian. So, I may follow your advice and give Mehta a chance.

For anyone who wants to know how opinions differ on Mahler symphonies: here is an interesting link: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/forum/recordings/mahler-symphonies

In terms of music making, how well does it compare to Mehta's recording made over 20 years ago with the New York Philharmonic?

Mehta gets mixed reviews for the old NY disc on Amazon for rushed tempos and overly aggressive brass, but I've always enjoyed that disc. The strings have a slightly metallic quality. The performance is nervous and tormented movements 1 through 4, but then flips the switch to happy in the finale.

I still have that rbcd in my collection along with the Chailly/Concertgebouw.
