Despite what I am about to say below, I expect to buy this because I've been really impressed with the other Praga discs I have. But (here we go folks), how does the sound of the violin compare with such as Mullova, Mutter, Hahn, Repin or Fisher, to say nothing of Milstein, Heifetz, Oistrach et al?

Since I am totally awed by the amazingly lifelike realism I get from my multi-channel set up on well recorded material, (no awareness of the rear channels til you turn them off; at which point you feel deprived) - quality of performer and performance have become somewhat less important to me than the quality of the sound. (I am totally perplexed by you folks who disclaim any interest in multi-channel) Anyway if anyone has anything nice to say about the tone of Csaba's fiddle, I'd like to hear it - I really didn't mean that as a put-down either - simply a request.

If I am lucky, I'll be able to pick the disc up when we go to Boston for a BSO concert (with Julia Fischer) this weekend. There is a Border's here (Albany NY) but I've never seen any Praga recordings there. Their SACD support is definitely lacking.

So perhaps I'll be able to respond to my own post to comment on Csaba's sound - hope it is good! (Hope I can find the disc...but then there is always mailorder right?)

Would you recommend the Brahms Cello Sonatas SACD from Praga, if you've heard it?

I agree with you about the MCH comments - so many from listeners who don't have it apparently claiming stereo is superior.

By all means don't go down the MCH route if you don't want, on grounds of space, cost or whatever - but claiming stereo has a better sense of depth, realism or a wider soundstage is just plain daft...

I just bought the Praga Brahms Cello Sonatas SACD from Praga, the Csaba/Heisser disc was not available in the store where I shopped (Tower Records, Cambridge MA) but the Kanka was and we were so impressed with the Haydn Cello Concerto disc that I had to have the Brahms Sonatas as well. Haven't been able to listen to it yet and will write about it as soon as I give it a listen...well then I'll have to compare that to the Rostropovitch and to the Ma before I start raving won't I?

Now having listened to this in stereo only, (The multi-channel system is now only a few days away!) I can only add one thing to Nickc's very well worded review.

Csaba has a rich full sound.

On this disc, perhaps his sound is preferable to some very big names I could mention. Don't be afraid to buy this because you never heard of Csaba. I heartily recommend it.

This is simply the worst chamber music SACD i've heard (soundwise of course). It sounds like stereo 60's DG , with very restricted sonics. Tape hiss is also cleary audible, it's strange, knowing it is "pure" DSD. It cannot stand any comparison with BIS Gluzman/Yoffe SACD "Fireworks" (my current violin/piano SACD of them all).

So this was originally recorded on magnetic tape? I was about to pull the trigger and order this one.

It seems so. I repeat - soundwise it's a mess, totally disbalanced.

Are you certain your disc isn't faulty?

Maybe...i was really frustrated, especially considering the general excellence of Praga Digital releases. No other of their SACDs failed me so crucially.
