Discussion: Corelli: Concerti Grossi Op. 6 - The Avison Ensemble

At least one reviewer complained about the dry acoustic on this ensemble's Handel recording. This one uses a different venue and is quite resonant and warm. The performances are less incisive than Pinnock's RBCD, but his new one has much more pleasant sound and the playing is lively enough for me.

Fugue, how does it compare to the Musica Amphion set on Brilliant?

It's less closely recorded but warmer in tone. Again, perhaps a bit less incisive than M.A. (Rhythmic liveliness doesn't seem to be E.A.'s primary concern!) I'd say they go more for elegance than intensity. Either set would provide enjoyment, but the audio quality on the Linn disc sets it apart. One balance issue is notable, though: the harpsichord is more prominent on the Brilliant set, which stands to reason, I suppose, since he is also the music director!
