Discussion: Schumann: Symphony No. 2, Overtures

Quite strange really, this disc apparently has been on sale since July in Japan and available for export but was listed everywhere as a CD. CD Japan eventually confirmed it was in fact a hybrid-SACD. This is rather disconcerting especially as Sony maybe are the culprits, how many other SACD titles are falling down between these particular cracks because of lazy classification?

The next disc in the series is announced for 25.12.2013, SICC-10208 Quick translation of contents

01.Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op 120
02.Finale work 52 Overture, Scherzo and
03.Concerto Stuttgart Kuhe 86 major works for horn and orchestra of four

Hiredfox have you been able to compare this series to the Challenge Schumann (Schønwandt)that you liked so much.

"Neither the recent MDG set nor the earlier Foster set on Pentatone can compete. Further back, Dausguard on BIS was the last reasonably decent version on SACD excluding the re-mastered Klemperers on EMI"

I thought you were investing in these?

I suspect that (2) is the Overture, Scherzo, and Finale, Op. 52 (the "symphony without a slow movement), and (3) is the Konzertstück in F major for four horns and orchestra, Op. 86.

I appreciate that the 3-disc cycle will have a very nice assortment of works beyond the numbered symphonies, pity the price in the US is more than it was for the Beethoven cycle.

It always is until the rest of the world (outside Japan) catches up.

I am. The two releases so far have been excellent. The weakness in the Challenge Classic set IMO is the 3rd where Jaarvi is almost unarguably better but we'll see how Jarvi manages with the 4th before making an overall judgement. Nobody seems to have mastered the trick of nailing all four.
