Wonderful review Geo - have you heard the Pletnev account? If so, how does it compare?

I feel the Oehms/Kitajenko recordings far outpace the Gergiev and Pletnev. The Kitajenko series is one for the ages. The other two are forgettable comparatively.

John,
Thanks to samayoeruorandajin for replying on my behalf! With all the early Tchaikovsky symphonies appearing lately, I didn't have the cash for buying the Pletnev cycle as well, especially since I was saving up to buy the Aeolus 19 SA-CD set of the Complete Bach Organ Works! I did, however, listen to the older Pletnev version, which I thought was rather quirky and with a fast slow movement - about 1 min shorter than Kitajenko's.

Geo

Um, interesting.... eccentric but interesting.

The Pletnev recordings are eccentric and not completely in a good way. The 1st movement of the 1st symphony is terribly pulled this way and that to its detriment and the 5th symphony, while I like certain aspects of it, grinds to a halt in the final movement. This makes it less convincing than Kitajenko's recording. Kitjanko's pacing is slow, but convincing whereas Pletnev especially works too hard to sound different than his DG recording.

I was teasing...

IMO none of the SACD offerings really get into the somberness of the folk songs at the heart of this work that it seems the composers might have intended and we must remember that the "Little Russian" title was added later by a critic not by the composer himself so one should not really look for clues linking with the Ukraine.

My favourite all along has been Dorati and many liked Bernstein - me too but not as much

I'll be getting this one soon. Looking forward to a continuation of the Kitajenko magic when it comes to Tchaikovsky

A recording that luxuriates in the orchestral beauty of the piece. Kitajenko's is a wonderful recording, slower than most, but still more convincing than Jarvi's on BIS or Pletnev's on Pentatone. I'm loving this series so far.
