Not correct. The BDP-S790 plays BluRay music discs perfectly through the coax and optical connections in multi-channel format.

Fitzcaraldo215 wrote "lossless". The multichannel sound that can be output via S/PDIF is lossy (Dolby Digital or DTS). These are the audio formats that existed on DVD already, while there are additional higher quality formats on Blu-ray (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD)

My BDP-S790 settings are:
Audio (HDMI) - Auto
DSD Output Mode - On
BD Audio MIX Setting - Off
Dolby Digital / DTS - Bitstream
DTS Neo:6 - Off
Audio DRC - Off
Super Audio CD Playback Channels - DSD Multi

Also I have the following questions for you:
1) What is your firmware revision level?
2) What AVR is S790 connected to?
3) Have you tried turning "DSD Output Mode" to "Off"? This will let player decimate DSD bitstream to 176.4 kHz/24 bit PCM.

I've had my S790 for almost 2 months and it's predecessor, BDP-S770 was in my system for 2 years. Both are excellent/reliable machines.

I have used a Sony BDP-760/1000ES for several years, via HDMI for BD I find it considerably superior to the Oppo 103.

Only sound from the CD layer of a hybrid SACD is output digitally over the coax or optical connections. Therefore only stereo. When you select to play the SACD layer (stereo or multichannel), those outputs stay mute.

That's the case with every Blu-ray player with SACD support, for copyprotection reasons. The only possible digital output from SACD (hi-rez layer) is via HDMI.

I've tried a stereo SACD disk (not hybrid) and it plays back via the digital coax connection.

Gerald, according to What HiFi, your SONY BDP~760 was a fine performing machine in 2009 but has been handily exceeded by other units since.

If you find it better performing than the current OPPO BDP~103, surprise of surprises....and hardly doubtful!

Can you tell us which disc? Some stereo SACDs are hybrid.

Hi Kal,
Sony SACD 9699-89037-6; Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell.
"This disc is designed for use in super audio cd players only".

The Norwegian 2L Blu-Ray discs in 5.1 DTS HD MA 24/192 kHz format play back fine through the BDP-S790 coaxial connection.

Ralph , I used the Norwegian 2L BD audio discs for my comparison, the BDP-S760 was far superior to the Oppo 103 so much so that I could not bear to listen to the Oppo , HF especially and took the 103 back for a refund, not only superior audio but better more natural video with Sony Bit mapping etc.Reality enhancer etc.. Oppo 103 gives a hard too bright picture on my Samsung LED Smart TV. I do not agree the 760 has been handily exceeded, I also have the BDP-S790.

With 5.1 sound coming from your speakers, or stereo downmixed from surround?
