I... sold my car when gas went to $3 a gallon. I have maximums on everything I buy. I'm not rich.

I guess it's fine to stick to one's principles when it's convenient, I mean you live in NYC I believe, so not having a car isn't that inconvenient. It would be the same in any big city. My "kids" live and work respectively in London and Amsterdam and they don't have cars as they don't need them.

I live in a forest miles from civilisation so we need two cars just to have a half-decent social life and to keep enough food in the larder to get us through the blizzards. Gas (petrol) here is costing us £1.40 a litre. You can do the maths for US equivalency.

The only point I'm making is that hi fi isn't a cheap pastime and the answer to higher priced SACD discs is to be far more selective about which to buy.

To a lot of posters, anything over $20 is an extravagant purchase and I highly respect those individuals who set a quota (I was there, believe me).

Was just reminding those who aren't adverse to spending more (like all those Esoteric SACD purchasers), that the once almost $60 (w/s/h outside of Japan) limited editions are now at more affordable levels and we may never see these discs again...............

hirefox, petro has gone down a little in the states. I am paying $3.99 for premium (93 octane) which was close to $5 a year ago.

So what I'm saving on gas, I'm splurging on SHM~SACDs......it all comes out in the wash!

And I really don't drive all that much so a tank lasts me awhile.

Regardless of fuel prices, I don't like to spend more than 10 bucks on an SACD.
Picked up 4 more Rolling Stones hybrids the other day for $35 second hand.

Great deal, Bradman.

Since I also have a Blu~Ray player, just purchased "Grrrr"......50 remastered Stones Classic on one BD~Audio disc for about $21 (from England).....all in stereo. Sounds pretty fantastic.

Don't kid yourself, I'm always looking for bargains in music, as well.......When I was a member of Your Music I paid $7 each delivered for approximately 20~25 brand new SACDs.

Those were the days!

BMG Music club even before that. Those were really the days.

But unfortunately, SAM, a lot of "clients" took the 12 discs for a penny deal and NEVER bought another disc from them...........

Which is why, I'm sure, they employed a rather talented accounting department who took maximum write offs for all the unpaid invoices which kept them in business for as long as they existed.

And ironically, towards the end, the BMG club no longer offered Sony or RCA product....mostly Universal....I always found that rather strange.

They got all that and more from me. BMG was in business for decades, as was Columbia House and the single discs and multidisc sets I paid for from them made them money for sure.

But, Rammie, perhaps your reflecting on some of your shenanigans?

I was always a member in good standing which is why my membership ported over to YourMusic (and also the Columbia DVD club, as well).

But a lot of the college crowd pulled that bogus membership scam but don't kid yourself, those creative accountants over at Columbia House/BMG (whatever) sharpened their pencils and took a maximum write~off.

Why doesn't someone start an SACD club (hint Zeus/Polly)

Get 12 SACDs (including SHM~SACDs) for a penny....................if you buy 8 more over the next ten years!

Sign me up!

I had multiple accounts and always paid for what I ordered and often very quickly. Got a lot of music and especially enjoyed the big CD sets.

I didn't give up cigarettes for health reasons, I gave them up in 1980 when they went to $1 a pack. People who know me know that I am thrifty and have spending limits on everything. They were 35 cents a pack when I started.

I also sold my car when gas went to $3 a gallon. I refuse to pay more than $25 for an LP or SACD and more than $15 for a download. I have maximums on everything I buy. Unlike you I'm not rich.

Hi, DSD,

How about US$10 per pack of 10-stick cigarettes, and US$6.5 per gallon of gas? How about US$120K for a Toyota 1600cc Altis? This is happened in Singapore, we don't get paid as high in US, albeit lower tax rates (but with not social security system here). But it is good to stop smoking. The SHM SACDs are still remotely untouchable of me. Really hope they gets lower soon.

BTW, I 'had been' enjoying your articles about Telarc and pure DSD stuff, and visited your blog too. Hope to hear more from you. All the best.
