Performance:   Sonics:
Riccardo Chailly's Brahms cycle with Gewandhausorchester got many awards. Now Decca publishes it on Blu-ray Audio, and results are fine.

I heard many interpretations of these works, and my own recommendation is still Vladimir Jurowski's powerful live performances (LPO). Chailly's tempi are moving, and he gives his own ideas to the Brahms' orchestrations. First and Second Symphonies are the most effectively, and Third and Fourth Symphonies lightness comes very close. The other orchestral works are nice bonus.

But why I give only four stars for the recording? The tone is crystal clear, but there isn't 5.1 multi-channel mix, only two-channel stereo. When you listen these pieces, the orchestra's sound doesn't surround you, you hear it only from right and left main speakers. It is a pity, because the recording is otherwise excellent. I recommend normal CD version. You can always put "Bottom Line on" from your amplifier. Then it attenuates surround speakers volume, and CD sounds like a SACD.

I recommend this carefully.
