Review by Dan Popp December 24, 2004 (6 of 14 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
Well, I thought I knew what Rachmaninov sounded like, and I thought I knew what liturgical choral music sounded like, but this disc has challenged those assumptions, and unfortunately I don't mean that as a compliment.

There is a lot of vibrato in the voices at all times, giving the disc (to me) a kind of "throwback" sound, like the singing in the Disney movies from the '50s. There are some beautiful moments and there are some strident moments. In those fortissimo passages the sound gets a little "choked," but perhaps this could be a fault of my playback system.

The sonics are not great, not terrible. Overall there seems to be a lack of depth and width to the soundstage (I'm listening in stereo).

Maybe all of this is exactly as it should be and will thrill more sophisticated listeners, but I find the performance tiring.
