Krips was a genial Austrian who, while never considered to be among the world's top conductors, made some important recordings, including Don Giovanni with Siepi, a Schubert Great C Major that some consider to rank near the top, the first stereo integral set of Beethoven symphonies (before Karajan), and he was the conductor for Rubenstein's first set of Beethoven concertos. I bought this recording almost on a whim - on sale at mdt, Krips was the second conductor I saw in the flesh (Maazel was the first), and I expected it to be rather old fashioned. Well, I was wrong. If I were to use an analogy, these readings remind me of Colin Davis' Haydn - yes, a larger orchestra than we're used to today, and use of modern instruments, but tempos are bracing, the playing of the RCO is marvelous (listen to the winds), and the recording natural and liquid. This is good Mozart, and maybe closer to the heart than some of the authentic instrument readings. To cite one example, Krips' tempo for the second movement of the "Prague" is a true Andante. There's much to enjoy here, and while I suspect this is the only 4.0 recording of Krips' Mozart cycle that Pentatone has, I note that the G-Minor and Jupiter have been released in Japan.
