Performance:   Sonics:
George Strait's voice is one of those sounds for which the SACD format was made. I wish they had brought it forward more in the mix, though. Still, the multi-channel mix is fine -- not too flashy. It suits the material.

As for the material, HONKYTONKVILLE is, for the most part, good old-school country music. (What's that sound there in the mix? Could it be a steel guitar? Even a fiddle played properly? What a relief.) There are a few clinkers in the mix ("Honk If You Honkytonk"? Give me a break. URBAN COWBOY was 20 years ago), but George is still as soulful a country singer as you're likely to find amid the throng of wannabe-types coming out of Nashville today. This SACD showcases his talent very well, even if it isn't quite the effort of some of his earlier recordings.

The bottom line: George's rendering of "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa" is well worth the price of admission here. You might find yourself playing that track over and over again.
