Performance:   Sonics:
The music of Ferdinand Ries is perfect for stumping musically knowledgeable friends. Play individual movements from these two symphonies and let your friends go nuts trying to identify which Haydn, or Beethoven, or Schubert symphony they're hearing. There's nothing terribly surprising in this as Ries was Beethoven's pupil and secretary for three years and these symphonies are roughly contemporaneous with Schubert's "Unfinished". Clearly the most pervasive influence was Beethoven's and though Ries was no mere epigone it's still true that these works will speak most directly to those who wish that Beethoven had written Symphonies 4a and 4b. This is the final recording in cpo's series of the Ries symphonies, and the only one on sacd (Naxos has an ongoing series of the Ries piano concerti, alas also rbcd only). There is a great deal of enjoyable music to be experienced from all of these recordings. With no other recordings available for reference, and absolutely no experience of Ries' music in the concert hall I can only assume that Howard Griffiths' performances do the music justice, though there are times when the pulse feels a little slack and I get the sense that if this was really Beethoven various details would be more pointed. The sound in multichannel is fine if unspectacular: a little bit of extra resonance intrudes, emphasizing an occasional sense of strain in the strings of the Zurich Chasmber Orchestra which somtimes sounds a little small for the music (the recording venue was a church). In re-reading this review I find that it sounds more equivocal than I intended, so I'll just reiterate that this disc is really very enjoyable
