Performance:   Sonics:
One of the problems with SACD is that the listener can hear the music better. Another way to say the same thing is that with Red-book, since there is always some degree of information hiding due to the lack of resolution, the listener's mind fills in the blanks some and comes out with a better performance than is actually there in the bits and bytes.

So it is with Zander's Mahler 5th. There is no glaring complaint with this release. The only shortcoming I hear is that it is not really much better than other versions I have heard. It has more clarity, granted, but that clarity only reveals a "normal" performance. Not a great one. Not that any of the members of the performing orchestra will ever read this, or that maestro Zander ever will either, but were they to ask, "What more can we do?" I would not be able to answer much other than to say that the musicians, to a man, need to play every phrase as if their lives depended on the approval of an executioner who could stop the performance at the first sign of ho-hum, bored playing. Lest you think I am being harsh, let me say that this recording only falls short by a nose. There IS music there.

Sonically, it is fine. And I would encourage you buy it, despite my comments.
