The years 1678 - 1685 were remarkable in at least one sense; I think I'm right in saying that born in that period were Vivaldi, Bach, Telemann and Handel! Telemann is a composer whose time has come (like Biber) I feel. Like Biber his music can be both profound and beautiful, but both composers also feel modern in their quirkiness to me, a quirkiness we wouldn't really see again until France in the early 20th century with composers like Satie. The quartets on this disc were premiered in Paris in 1738 for the combination of violin, bass viol, flute and harpsichord. Just listen to the last movement of the A minor quartet, no 2, and you'll be spellbound by textures almost seeming to prophesise jazz 300 years later. Not as fiery as his Tafelmusik productions they give us a different slant on this fascinating composer. Florilegium as always play beautifully; I just love the raw, buzzing sound of the bass viol in the first 3 quartets. To me Channel is the most exciting classical SACD label going around these days and I always love the sound Jared Sacks produces. I could just repeat myself from earlier Channel reviews when I say I thought the performers were in my living room in MC, but, its the truth!
