The choice of Riverside titles taken by Fantasy for SACD reissue reflects popularity or historical significance of these albums rather than sound: Several Riversides were either taped under less than ideal circumstances, and, to save on costs, on less than premium tape: some have deteriorated audibly (the Wes Montgomery quartet SACD is a case in point). This Bobby Timmons session, although a classic in his recording career, featuring a few of the well known soul jazz tunes he wrote for the Blakey and Adderley bands, has some distortion in forte pasages, and sounds not very refined overall. The high resolution places the limitations of the source tape under a magnifying glass. The OJC LP I had showed the same distortions but sounded a little warmer (the CD layer here comes close to LP sound, but is less dynamic, a liitle flat compared to the SACD layer, but not as harsh and direct - make your own choice).
The music is good, though, and the bassist and drummer are sympathetic to Timmons and his tunes.
Fantasy should have concentrated on selecting the best sounding tapes instead of the most popular items available elsewhere - the Keepnews Collection, which seems to have taken the place of this SACD series, duplicates a title or two but seems to consider tape condition to a higher degree.

The guy who wrote 'Moanin' with Art Blakey and 'This here' with Cannonball Adderley. That's partly who Bobby Timmons was. This is wonderful piano jazz. A nice combination of bob and ballads, accompanied by Sam Jones (b) and Jimmy Cobb (dr). The recording quality of this Riverside album leaves much to be desired. There is an entire spectrum of notes missing. As we hear with so many older discs the piano is muffled with no body, hardly any extension, distortion on the overtones and practically no sense of decay. Nevertheless this is a very enjoyable disc musically speaking. Plus I think this stuff is slowly but surely getting OOP so pick one up when you still can.
