I am really glad this has volume 1 on the cover because I will look forward to number two with delight...Previous works by this composer left me bemused but this sonic delight from two films is beautifull played and recorded......Played without knowledge of the composer you could virtually put anyone from 1900-1999 down...enjoy it...Dave

This is a truly magnificent disc -- quite awesome in fact. The first soundtrack "The Story of an Unknown Actor" has shades of Bernard Herrmann (not his sci-fi side) and lasts for about 18 minutes, while the forty seven and a half minute "Commissar" is made of somewhat sterner stuff -- often very dramatic, sometimes quirky, and occasionally dissonant -- but truly fascinating and both scores are stunningly orchestrated with use of harpsichord in the ""Commissar". There are shades of Nino Rota in some of the harmonies and rhythms. The playing of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under the truly inspired conducting of Frank Strobel is exceptionally fine and the recording is almost frightening realistic, even in ordinary stereo. The dynamic range is very wide but the recording can still be played at a high level because it is so clean and transparent and there is wonderful atmosphere to it as well. I have heard the multichannel layer and was extremely impressed with that too.

Very strongly recommended. I'd give it more than five stars if I could!

I was really excited when I read that volume two is to be released early next month. I have already ordered two copies of it -- one for a friend, for whom I am getting volume one as well at the same time
