This is another candidate for sacd of the year.I had already been impressed with his Schubert disc and been advised that the CD of this was exceptional but... . the fantastic variations of colour dynamics and tones in Debussy musical paintings cannot be as good as they are on this sacd layer... If you have ever had Tomita s electronic interpretation of Debussy (Snowflakes) you will instantly realize that the normal pianists impressionistic approach is to blur the images...Tomita manages to open up all the threads and crystalize them to a high degree...I became very much aware when listening to this disc of the various strands again..It is not a matter of Tomitas influence on my listening ..as I have gone back to other vinyl/cds to relisten to some highly reviewed versions.....The impressionistic bit is in the short hints of bigger tunes ,musical one liners ? but I darent mention these.!.. Definitly a BUY IT NOW..even if you dont know or like these works...Not all these works are probably the easisest piano fare to get your teeth into but on this sacd you will definitly be hearing them at their best...And Its a Bargain....Dave

Performance:   Sonics:
This is a wonderful performance of really beautiful music. However, I have some sonic problems with much of this disc. In particular the "Clair de Lune" and most of the following tracks suffer some king of added "sizzling" distortion. This noise sounds a bit like a cartridge mistracking on vinyl. What is strange is that does not quite coincide with the notes and it sometimes even precedes them. It is clearly audible. Unless I have a faulty copy, I think this must be a digital artefact created when re-encoding the original digital recording into the SACD format. I have never heard it when analogue tape has been converted to SACD.

The acoustics are a a little strange too. There is almost more reverb than the original sound and the tone balance has been adversely affected. It sounds a litle like a piano playing in a tiled bathroom about four doors away down a long corridor.

All in all it's still worth buying for the performance and the music.

I have listened to the SACD stero layer only with a Crimson 710/640 pre/power combination, Sony SACD and Living Voice Avatars.
