Performance:   Sonics:
A real disc of two halves! I had no idea about any of these pieces but, seeing it was BIS, I thought I'd try it.

The first piece is the Shilkret concerto. This was premiered in 1945 and is called, along with Rhapsody in Blue, the first "crossover concerto". It is a swooning, Hollywood type piece, with jazzy type inflections.

The other two pieces are totally different and I'm not sure how to describe them! They are both trombone and orchestra but this time Christian Lindbereg is a narrator.

The Return Of Kit Bones is a bizarre kind of Sergio Leone western piece whose slow movement could have come from Sibelius. I find the spoken narration totally nerdy and wish it wasn't there.

Helikon Wasp is a tougher, but always tonal, piece which also has silly narration interspersed within it.

The sound is also schizophrenic, though all the notes say is August 2004, Sala Sau Paulo. The Shilkret is breezy and swoony, though for some bizarre reason the trombone seems to echo much more through the rears in the final movement than in the others.

The other two recordings seem closer and more present - in Helikon Wasp we are placed in the middle of the orchestra - it sounds fantastic.

Recommended if you want something a bit off the beaten track!
