Performance:   Sonics:
This disc shares many of the characteristics, merits and demerits of other recordings in the Wand/Bruckner series.

The performance is extremely fine- flexible in the Wand manner, transparent and muscular. Inner detail of orchestral line is particularly fine, with the problems of Bruckner balance (massed brass against leaner strings and woodwind) particularly well resolved.

Wand does not dwell on ethereal passages and the performance gains cumulative power and cohesion as it proceeds. The last movement, which can often fail or lose focus - as it does in the otherwise fine Blomstedt reading on SACD - makes its full impact here.

If you prefer your Bruckner more contemplative and spiritual, you might want to look elsewhere. But this is definitely an approach to respect, and Wand's cult status in this series is easy to understand. But there are other approaches, of course.

Sonically? Not so hot. Strings are wiry and a bit thin. Brass lacks full bass foundation. There is some clouding of textures and stage foreshortening. And the dynamics sound a bit sat-upon. Even so, IMO this is better overall than the somewhat coarse sound of the Blomstedt Bruckner 7 on Querstand. I actually found that quite tiring.

So, here is a fine Bruckner performance, shining through despite fairly moderate sound.

Parenthetically, why do Bruckner symphonies so rarely get the mid-hall, spacious and transparent sound that allows them to really sing?
