Performance:   Sonics:
An opera in three acts with a libretto by A. Marchi based on the Orlando Furioso (1516) de l’Ariosto, Alcina was first performed in London in 1735. Along with Ariodante, Alcina is Haendel’s other masterpiece which used a new style in which ballet first appeared. But the famous composer can hardly be said to have had any luck with his lyrical dramas. The oratorios were at the time more popular with the public: “The operas, to which Haendel had devoted almost half his career, were never performed and the dramatic oratorios were neglected in favor of those in which the chorus played the role of principal protagonist. Up to the middle of the 20th century, Haendel’s music remained shamefully neglected, all except the Messiah”, notes Denis Arnold. The label Farao’s production heard here is quite successful and merits particular attention, for it captures what few live recordings do: life onstage. How can one resist the fervor one hears during these nearly three hours? How can one not be enthusiastic before so much energy? The singers and orchestra are on the same wavelength in a formidable lesson in lyric passion. Ivor Bolton leads his troops in nothing less than class-act vocal and musical fireworks. In a rich and precise recording, this SACD box-set has the communicative exhilaration of glorious tomorrows…of Haendel of course.
