I will not tell anything about the performance because I don't know well that oratorio. However, I think Harnoncourt have nothing to learn more about J.S. Bach (have done an integral of cantatas with Leonardt) and it seems to me that Christmas Oratorio is well done.
I like the way Harmonia Mundi (Deutschland) record voices. I was very satisfied by the Harnoncourt version of Messiah Haendel (even if someones prefer more "dynamic" performance like Jacobs for example) which gave me a lot of emotion. It is the same way here, again voices (and orchester) are very clear and offer a wonderful stereo "picture". It is very easy to point each instrument and solo singer. I note a good balance between front and rear channels (even if that web page doesn't allow me to rate as MC, I confirm and I listened it as "multichannel" record (5.0), my subwoofer is "out" for the moment so I'm not sure it's an 5+1 channels). Really a nice feeling of live concert.
Hope that Harnoncourt will give now the Bach "passions" (St Matthew and St John).
