This is Indian music infused with some Western influences coming from Jon Hassell, Ry Cooder and Rick Jones. I would encourage you to give this one a try. I have a little exposure to Indian music, but I cannot say that I am an expert. JH, RC and RJ have used their musical skills to provide texture to an essential Indian setting. So maybe this disc is not fusion at all, or very gently so. But it works, at least on me.
The sound quality is exceptional (on both CD and SACD layer). This is a vintage Kavi Alexander recording. You get a real sense of the acoustical space (it's recorded in a Chapel).
As far as the music is concerned, it conjurs up all sorts of images and it's definitely meditative in nature. Don't mistake that for 'boring'. I was reading a magazine during playback but I could hardly concentrate on the article because the music kept drawing me in. It's deep. I think it will stand the test of time and repeated listening sessions very well. The Bansuri is a terrific instrument. There is a companion recording called 'Lady astride the tiger' which I am now eager to try, but unfortunately it's not out on SACD. I think 'A Meeting By The River" was announced for SACD release so keep an eye out for that one as well.
