Here is a Super Audio CD absolutely exceptional for the choice of works chosen, the pure DSD multicanal recording, but also because it pays tribute to one of the greatest composers of the time. Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was a child prodigy, and as Pierre-Emile Barbier so rightly states in the booklet accompanying the recording, “The purgatory to which his considerable body of works has been put would seem to be ending after nearly two centuries. As is the case with many Austro-Hungarian musicians, Beethoven’s imposing shadow followed by Schubert’s inexhaustible asides have resulted in all the scores of this pianist-composer, who was one of Mozart’s students, being relegated to a supporting role… .” On the program of this disc are “Introduction, Theme and Variations” in F major for Oboe and Orchestra Op.102, the “Sextet” in D minor Op.74 for Piano, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Horn, Viola, Cello and Double Bass, dating from 1816, and the “Great Concerto for Bassoon” and orchestra in F major. Since happiness does not arrive alone, the interpretation is also a feast. All the players together play as one in this enchanting music, and especially the subtle, poetic and passionate oboe of Vladislav Borovka. This is an SACD of the first order one will return to often.
