This is the first review of this disc here and it's been out since 1998. I think this is truly a 'forgotten' SA-CD. I certainly completely overlooked it. It was one of the contributors to Positive Feedback Online that pointed it out to me on another forum. He recommended it for its spacious, effortless and sparkling piano sound. I have to agree. In that way it is very much like the Chris Lomheim disc which captures a somewhat richer piano. Both of these discs have a natural ease and extension that makes them a joy to listen to. The Jobim is of course full of the famous Brazilian rhythms. Manfredo Fest (1936-1999) is often regarded as one of Brazil's bossa nova originals so we are in good hands here. Sadly this was to be his last album.

The SA-CD sports a healthy 63 minutes of music spread out over 12 tracks. Jobim wrote hundreds of songs and here you'll find some of the well known compositions, but also less obvious ones. There is percussion, bass and drums and the band is a tightly swinging unit. Don't mistake this for nicely flowing background music - it can be - but take the time to really listen. Listen to track 5 'Amparo' and hear how Manfredo Fest weaves intricate patterns. Beautiful.
