Performance:   Sonics:
Well Im suprised none of the site reviewers have posted on this one?.
Firstly I held off buying something so early in the Maestros career thinking it would be slighter Beethoven than his much appreciated later sonatas and solo works.
The first things that struck me on first playing was the the sonic quality and remarkable playing.
This is 25 year old Beethoven sounding like any of the later numbers.
It was easy to get carried away listening to music that could not ever be mistaked for anyone else.
It is even more difficult not to start,oh that sounds like an extract from his Moonlight?,Tempest?,Hammerklavier? ,Rage over a lost penny ? or many of the later pieces.
After a couple of playings and reading the excellent notes it becomes clear that these three works are indeed quite different from each other.I wont repeat the liner notes which explain it in greater detail.
Even within those differences ,each sonata has a typical and similair variety ,ie Fast slow and sometimes devilishly virtuostic. It must have been quite astounding for Haydn to have been suddenly confronted with this "new" level of piano sonata.
As regards the pianist who plays and seems totally oblivious to any technical difficulty, these must challenge or surpass most others.Especially in recorded quality.
This sells itself on several different levels as an ideal starting point for anyone wanting Ludwigs piano sonatas and doesnt know where to start, plus anyone who knows the later pieces and wants to be entertained and fascinated if they havent heard these before.(like me).
Probably the most rewarding disc of the year to date and a lesson not to be fooled by early opus numbers?
No apologies for 5 star rating before anyone else gives it the same.
