Dedicated to the well-known Song of Songs, this recording seeks to testify to the multi-faceted inspiration this sacred text offered to numerous composers from the 16th and 17th centuries. We thus here find Jacob Clemens non Papa, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Francisco Guerrero, Nicolas Gombert, Orlando de Lassus, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Jean Lhéritier, Rodrigo de Ceballos, and Sebastian de Vivanco. The group Stile Antico, composed of the sopranos Helen Ashby, Kate Ashby, Rebecca Hickey, the altos Emma Ashby, Elenor Harries, Carris Jones, the tenors Peter Asprey, Andrew Griffiths, Tom Herford, and the basses Will Dawes, Oliver Hunt and Mathew O’Donovan, give us as much pleasure as in their earlier SACD devoted to Tallis, Byrd, Sheppard (Music for Compline) (see Opus HD Magazine N°22). The beauty of the tonal mix here present is captivating from beginning to end, and the musical discourse seems to unfurl in a single and singular inspiration. Each piece performed possesses its own expressive palette that the beaming ardor of Stile Antico transcends with both passion and serenity. Here is truly a great moment of poetic music.
