Beautiful, sublime, exquisite!!! This is the best recording in years of Chausson's ode to the sea and lost love, plus a group of art songs by Louis Vierne, which are VERY rare, as orchestrated by Durufle. The featured tenor has a lovely lyrical voice, and he just caresses every vocal line in this music.

Beautiful as the Vierne songs are here, the Chausson is the most wonderful treat. Dutoit thought he would get great credit on his Chausson RBCD of this same work and others by the composer, as his was the first modern recording with a tenor. Most of the time, this work has been recorded with a soprano taking the vocal part, and the lovely Victoria de los Angeles made this work one of her specialties.

Unfortunately, like many of Dutoit's performances in Montreal, the performance completely misses the core of the work, and Francois Le Roux is NOT anywhere near the singer that Steve Davislim is. This is some of the most beautiful singing to be heard on any SACD.

The recording catches every bit of the orchestration, and is quite wonderful. I have loved the Poem of Love and the Sea for many years and I encourage you to buy this excellent disc.
