Performance:   Sonics:
Here is an utterly remarkable tribute to the composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905-1963). On three exceptional SACDs, we are allowed to hear all of his works composed for string quartet. On the program are the String Quartet “Carillon,” dating from 1933, the String Quartet N°2, written in 1945 and revised in 1947-48, the Small Concerto for String Quartet and Percussion, dating from 1931-32, and the Chamber Concerto for Clarinet, String Quartet and String Orchestra, dating from 1930-35. Next come various interviews, and one with the composer recorded in 1962. Richly illustrated with family photos and documents, the brochure accompanying the set is indicative of the label’s editorial care. Here is an initiative to be saluted, and one that should be emulated in today’s market, despite the absence of a French translation.
