The works for piano by Leos Janacek (1854-1928) are not numerous, but the expressivity in what is there is of rare refinement. “For me, the chord is a being full of life; a flower of blood in musical art. I know that my heart is tense when I write. I know that it grieves, it cries, then suddenly lets up, broods, breaks from the fog, hardens into granite. What should I do with borrowed epithets, beauty, not beauty! Its being coincides with my own in a blink of life,” wrote the composer in 1907. For this first volume, Slavka Pechocova interprets the Sonata for Piano in E flat minor, “street scenes,’ from 1905; the cycle “On a Brushy Path, Wiped Away by Time;” “Memory;” and the four pieces “In the Fog.” With infinite grace and a sense of poetry one perceives under the surface, the young pianist, who is a student of Ivan Moravec, moves us by a refined, tactful musical discourse that is somewhere between fervor and modesty. In a warm sound recording which restores the piano’s rightful original tonal beauty, this SACD is an absolute must.
