Absent from the dictionaries and other guides in French, Hans Erich Apostel (1901-1972) studied under Alfred Lorenz, who initiated him to the piano and orchestral direction, before Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg taught him to compose. Then, “after the second world war, Apostel developed the Austrian section of the Gesellschaft für Neue Musik, of which he was president between 1947 and 1950. He worked as a corrector for the publisher Universal (who since then and today publishes his music), and is responsible for new editions of Wozzek (1955) and Lulu(1963) by Berg. He received numerous prizes and awards during his lifetime. His work Paralipomena dodekaphonika is a good example of his latter work. He died in Vienna on November 30, 1972 at the age of seventy-two.” In the current recording, we can find all of his works for string quartet as well as recorded interviews, similar to the preceding album devoted to Hartmann (see Opus HD Magazine N°68). Once again, this set of three SACDs is unique, and can only be warmly recommended to discover an unjustly forgotten composer.
