Back in the 1950's two seperate recording sessions yielded four different albums. I have the original sacd from the early 2000's which was mastered by Doug Sax. Of the four albums released I would say Cookin' is my least favourite but still has some great Trumpet and Sax playing in it and has a gorgeous version of My Funny Valentine which is awesome.

I was curious as to how this particular shm-sacd might sound with the new transfer. The Sax sacd was mastered from the original tapes while this shm-sacd was trasferred from a secondary source tape.

In this comparison I think both sacd versions have their respective benefits without there being a clear cut winner. The Doug Sax version sounds closer to the master tapes.e.i. real but can get a little hard sounding at higher volumes. The Shm sacd can be turned up much louder and is slightly gentler sounding and has a wider soundstage.

Recommended but in my opinion is not in the higher level of Shm-Scd tape to Dsd transfers.

Miles Davis Quintet: Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet 2014 Reissue MONO
SHM SACD Universal (Japan)UCGO-9045
Not to be confused with Analogue Productions CPRJ 7094 SA

This disc got one perfect review: My wife was upstairs and yelled down, is that one of those Hi, HD, whatever CD's, YES, it sounds like the piano is right in our living room.
That is as good as a review as I can get.

Performance: Miles, 22nd studio LP released in 1957. Recorded with 4 other musicians. I found this to have a swing feel and I highly enjoyed it. It is a straight moving jazz album, no doubt. It is not fusion or gimmicks or anything, just jazz.

Mono Sonics: Perfect. Great ambiance with clear and detailed instruments that have a wonderful soft sonic feel.

Packaging: Plastic jewel case with square corners. Original Prestige 7094 rear album notes. Mini paper booklet all in Japanese. Label of the disc is printed with a special green ink called 'Onsho Shiyou,' which minimizes diffuse reflection.

I have no prior experience with this recording. I do own a few AP Prestige Mono jazz recordings that are Hybrid SACD. My system excels at front end stereo/mono sources and I believe this SHM SACD is a better version based on the hybrid's that I have.

A very welcome addition to my library.

Just got this from Japan. I'm not familiar with the other pressing on SACD, but it is a fantastic recording as far as I'm concerned. On top of this, the album itself is a joy to listen to.
