First, this release is first class. Four SACDs (symphonies) + two CDs (dialogue and epilogue), housed in a sumptuous panoramic black digipac box set, accompanied by a brochure of the same dimensions that is richly illustrated. This reissue of the symphonies by Schubert by Jonathan Nott is part of project that also includes a part that is devoted to the influence of the German composer on the music of our time. Thus, on the two CDs titled “Dialogue and Epilogue,” we can hear the works of Jörg Widmann (1973) “Lied für Orchester” from 2003, Wolfgang Rihm (1952) “Erscheinung” from 1978, Bruno Mantovani (1974) “Mit Ausdruck” for clarinet and orchestra from 2003, Dieter Schnebel (1930) “Schubert-Phantasie” from 1978 revised in 1989, Luciano Berio (1925-2003) “Rendering per orchestra” from 1988-90, Aribert Reimann (1936) “Métamorphosen über ein Menuett von Schubert (D.600) für 10 instrumente,” Hans Werner Henze (1926) “Der Erklönig Orchesterfantasie aus “Le Fils de l’Air” from 1996, Hans Zender (1936) “Schubert Chöre 1-4,” and Kurt Schwertsik (1935) “Epilog zu Rosamunde” Op. 33 from 1978. Jonathan Nott and Schubert together are an exchange of sensibility that works, a perfect osmosis, a sharing at every moment, and all of this “corpus élargi” becomes indispensible, unique even, in view of the proposed works. Here is a must-have that is refined and demanding, just as it is highly insightful insofar as its elaboration.
