Performance:   Sonics:
“The soloists are excellent, but the greatest strengths of this performance are the chorus’ precision and tonal beauty. Their precision makes the best possible case for Spano’s sinewy interpretation, and their tonal beauty brings us closer to the heart and soul of Vaughan Williams.” -- The Absolute Sound

This is a beautifully powerful choral/operatic/orchestral performance - somewhat mesmerizing and another wonderfully produced Telarc SACD in 2-channel - according to The Absolute Sound, the multi-channel is even better. My preference leans towards orchestral performances with choral and operatic interludes providing variation. So while I enjoyed this recording, I thought it leaned too heavily towards the choral/operatic. I also thought the soundstage depth was not quite as good as some of the other Telarc recordings.

I have to agree 100%!!!! Great singing and Spano captures the mood perfectly!!

My only disappointment?? That this did not start a complete SACD cycle of the Vaughn-Williams symphonies.

BRAVO to Telarc and Maestro Spano and the ASO and ASO Chorus!!

Performance:   Sonics:
Classical music novice that I am, I found this to be a stunning performance. I loved the orchestration even more than the choral presentation, awesome as it is. You can hear the flavors of English folk music in Williams' score. The lyrics are wordy, but really do convey the magnificence of the sea. I would recommend this to any fan of folk music who wants to expand their horizons a little.
