Usually, I am not quite fond of neither recorder, nor harpsichord music. This disc however is different.

First, there is the playing: this small ensemble of four musicians is beautifully playing together. You can actually hear them listening to each other: the recorder is not blowing away the other instruments as is often the case on these kind of discs. Instead there's a beautiful osmosis between the instruments: I especially enjoyed the way the recorder and the bassoon flow into each other.

At the same time, from the quality of the sound, I get the impression that each instrument has been recorded separately. Every instrument stands out independently from the other, yielding a sound stage where each instrument has its own place. The harpsichord seems to be coming from behind the other instruments, as it sounds slightly quieter.

The recorder sounds clear, but without the shrieking nor the yelling often heard on regular CD. There were a few places where the recorder got projected out of my boxes, but that may rather be a small problem of my installation than a problem with the disc. A recorder – how simple an instrument it is – always remains a difficult instrument to reproduce, especially on the forte. The other instruments too are recorded with care which, given the sacd quality, is especially beneficial for the harpsichord.

In my opinion, this disc perfectly shows how recording technology and interpretation from the musicians can amplify each other, lifting both to a higher level.

A beautiful disc !
