Recommending this recording probably depends chiefly on what you think of Schoenberg's inflation of the Brahms Piano Quartet into an early Brahms Symphony. It always sounds just that, inflated, to me, but worth an occasional listen. The Quartet and other Schoenberg pieces are done impeccably by Rattle and the Berlin, the Quartet performance is a definite advance on Rattle's earlier Birmingham recording, and I like it better than the Eschenbach RBCD performance also. I very much like the new Japanese EMI SACDs, and this is as fine as the others, rich and spacious. Not everyone's cup of tea, but a nice change of pace at the least.
