Bernard Haitink and London Symphony Orchestra started their Bruckner cycle with this album. Haitink's previously releases on LSO Live (Beethoven: Complete Symphonies and Triple Concerto & Strauss: Ein Alpensinfonie) are very good, and now he continues this line. Haitink used there Leopold Nowak's edition with 1880 Finale, and overall results are marvelous! I heard long time ago Osmo Vänskä's recording with Minnesota Orchestra (BIS), and they used 1888 version. But this is much better - there are 5.1 multi-channel mix, BIS uses only 5.0 - because Haitink finds right line in Bruckner's religiously music. First movement begins strings quiet tremolo, and horn's famous melody. LSO plays magnificently. Third movement's familiar "hunting horns" sounds wonderfully, and gently trio in G flat major is touching. Barbican Hall's dry acoustic isn't very good for Bruckner's music - St. Paul's Cathedral would be better - but LSO Live's state-of-art recording clears almost this problem. Still, this is very good start for Haitink's and LSO's project.
