In three SACDs, the label Cybèle retraces the pianistic legacy of the Franch composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, born in 1925. Based on the original scores of the works, we can here hear “Douze Notations” from 1945, the three Sonatas dating respectively from 1946, 1948 and 1955-1957/1963, “Incises” from 1994/2001 (expanded version from 2001), as well as “Une Page d’Ephéméride” dating from 2005. As was the case for earlier volumes of this artist-centered collection, dedicated not only to the music by each artist but also to their personality, a long interview with Pierre Boulez done at IRCAM in 2011 offers the possibility of getting to know the subject better. He evokes in German, unfortunately without translation (which takes the cake for a Frenchman), Frank Zappa, John Cage, René Char, Jean-Louis Barrault, Antonin Artaud, and last but not least, Olivier Messiaen. Throughout this demanding pianistic journey, Dimitri Vassilakis defends these works with a rigor bathed in poetry that will leave no one indifferent. With a musical discourse of absolute clarity, lightness of playing that is both luminous and serene marks these pages with a unique respiration. This indispensable release, whose sound quality is exemplary, and is richly illustrated and documented, cannot be ignored.
