Here is a most welcome release devoted to the cello variations in the Rococo style. It proposes the “Variations on a Theme from the Enchanted Flute by Mozart WoO.46, Op.66” by Beethoven, the “Variations on a Theme by Rossini H.290” by Martinu, as well as the “Ludwigsgruss Variations on a Theme by Beethoven” and the “Variations on a Theme by Dvorak by the contemporary composer, Jiri Gemrot , born in 1957, with Per Rundberg on the piano and Jeremy Findlay on the cello. It was Findlay who spearheaded the recording: “The very idea of the program on this recording came to me at the beginning of 2011 when Jiri Gemrot began composing his Variations on a Theme by Dvorak. He had already completed ones on the young prodigy that was Beethoven, and it turned out that they had many points in common with those of Bohuslav Martinu, in addition to the fact that each one had made it a point to write at least two series, highly different in spirit, as if the cello disposed of two modes of expression which were complementary.” With a highly inspired musical discourse, Jeremy Findlay and Per Rundberg are wonderful from beginning to end of this indispensable SACD, which can be savored without any moderation.
