Performance:   Sonics:
This 1981 comeback album from Miles Davis contains 2 cheesy tracks meant for radioplay ("Shout" and the title track), but the rest is a good blowing session, with Miles playing open and muted trumpet.

The US/European CD reissue from the late 80's has never been remastered, so I expected quite an improvement from this new DSD transfer by Mark Wilder. But the limiting factor is clearly the sloppy studio recording. Like on his similarly jam-session-style album "Star people" from 1983, the sound is flat, the top end limited and the bass boomy. "Shout" sounds awfully overprocessed like a pop single.

The SACD sounds more dynamic and immediate than the CD, but it's only worth getting if you are a fan of this Miles session and the marginal improvement is important to you. It's an SACD for Miles completists (like me) but not for audiophile jazz fans.
