Billion Dollar Babies is a wonderful record and I was very pleased to finally own a copy on sacd. .
Prior to owning the SACD all my listening of this album was via the French Warner Bros CD 7599-27269-2. While not perfect the Warner Bros CD was always a very enjoyable listen.
The first time I played the SACD of Billion Dollar Babies I was very disappointed. It seemed sterile and lifeless. After a day to reflect upon my initial impression, I wondered if the many hundreds of times I listened to the Warner Bros CD had convinced me that it was the way the album should sound ? I had become used to the Warner CD and anything that sounded different to it my brain, was rejecting.
So today, I played the SACD six times in a row. That did the trick. My initial impression of this disc being lifeless and sterile without any edge to it was completely wrong. What was missing was distortion - and not the good kind.
Lesson learned for me here is that you should never write off any disc until you have played it at least five times - especially if you have played a previous version more times than you could count.
It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but it does produce a level of clarity and detail that the Redbook CD simply does not reveal.
This is the definitive version of Billion Dollar Babies.
