Performance:   Sonics:
I heard many recordings of Johannes Brahms' A German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) and this, Valery Gergiev's peaceful performance is welcomed, because there aren't many SACD releases of this work.
Gergiev's tempo are moving, and London Symphony Orchestra plays beautifully. First movement, "Selig sind Leid tragen" is excellent: London Symphony Chorus' tone is deep and enjoyable, and 5.1 multi-channel recording is outstanding: Barbican Hall's dry acoustic surrounds the listener and when subwoofer is on, the music sounds very natural and resonantly. Second movement is also very good. Third movement, "Herr, lehre doch mich", is more powerful and dramatic than previous movements. Christopher Maltman's loudly and sweetly voice sounds very good, and he sings quite difficult solos very well. Movement's end is very effectively. Fourth movement is gentle and Sally Matthews shines in her beautiful solo in fifth movement. I really like it. London Symphony Chorus follows soloist closely, and Gergiev brings some great new effects of this movement. All in all, very welcomed release of Romantic music's masterwork!
