K. Lee vcl & p & Fender Rhodes & B3, K. Barron p, R. Carter b, G. Tate ds, G. Goldstein p & accordion, J. Yoshida g, B. Wittman ds & per, J. Heath ts & ss, O. Mathisen ss, I. Igarashi tp, Strings, SMEJ 1999. Keiko Lee sings twelve very well known standards on this disc. She is accompanied by some of the greatest jazz men ever and everything is very relaxed. Lees very peculiar way of singing with her dark voice is sometimes rather a mixture of talking and singing. Her interpretation of the songs is of the common kind, not much surprising but entertaining, anyway, and the version of What A Wonderful World is really exciting. I would like the music more, if they had left the strings, but it seems that every singer has to make one “string record” in his live, unfortunately. Just think of the ridiculous “Lady in Satin”. The sound is o.k. but not perfect.
