While I would be ecstatic to have read that all the Island/Tuff Gong Marley titles were getting released instead of this "Best Of" collection, I'll take what I can get. UMe announced the Soundgarden and Marley titles within a week of each other, two brand new mixes. Where the Soundgarden fails in almost all respects this one shines. SA-CD.net readers will perhaps be familiar with Bob Clearmountain's surround capabilities via the excellent and almost universally praised Roxy Music Avalon SACD which 192 of 198 here have recommended (see - Roxy Music: Avalon)

I'm hard pressed to find a single bad song in the Island releases from Catch A Fire/Burnin' in 1973 through to the post-humous 1983 release Confrontation. I would love Clearmountain to be tasked with surround mixes of all these. There is much discrete activity on this disc, something that should be easy to do given all the percussion in Marley's music. The bass seems more controlled on most songs than on some of the albums and some are different versions, Easy Skankin' is not the same mix as found on Kaya for example and the studio No Woman shows up here instead of the live, I have read it surmised that this was due to only the studio multitracks being available for this one.

For some peculiar reason UMe have released a "hot" mix for the stereo high resolution track instead of the lovely dynamic one available on HD Track and Qobuz. Skip the stereo track, head directly to the 5.1 mix which is the star here and is absolutely lovely and dynamic. I cannot describe just how much better Exodus sounds in surround, this is the defining moment of the disc for me. The breadth of the sound is huge, massively opened up in surround. The guitar licks during the "move" chants slide down your walls from front to back, you wish it would go on longer than the already lenghty 7+ minute mark.

The problem with Legend is so much isn't represented, with the "Live" version replaced we now have something from Natty Dread (1974) represented but still nothing from the jam-packed-with-solid-tunes Survival (1979) and nothing from Rastaman Vibration. Hopefully the sales of the 5.1 Blu-ray are decent and the Marley foundation may consider doing 5.1 mixes throughout.

I give this my highest recommendation, exceptionally well done surround mix, gorgeously intact dynamics and terrific material.

This is a superb multi channel disc that is easily the best version of this title ever released. I've had various versions of this title over the years. It's a shame the other blu ray of this title that was released a year ago was so bad. I had that one also.
